Joseph R. Chevalier, Jr.

Chief Joseph R. Chevalier, Jr. was born and raised in New Orleans. He graduated from Brother Martin High School in 1975 and Nichols State University in 1980 with a BS in Marine Biology. Chief Chevalier worked for Freeport McMoran located in Belle Chase, LA. For 12 years before relocating to Atlanta, GA.

Chief Chevalier has been with Morehouse School of Medicine since 1996. In that span he has served as a research technician, Program Coordinator, Program Manager, Manager of Faculty Development, and Director of Health and Wellness. Since 2007, Chief Chevalier has served as the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness / Chief of Police. Chief Chevalier also serves as the SWAT Team Commander and is part of the FBI Counter Terrorism Task Force Working Group.

Before coming to MSM, Chief Chevalier accumulated over 15 years of research and development experience including work as a Nuclear Research Scientist.

Chief Chevalier has over 12 years experience as a Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy. There he gained his SWAT qualification and serves on the reserve tactical unit (T.R.U. – Tactical Response Unit). Chief Chevalier continues to serve as a Reserve Sergeant for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Chevalier is a former Department of Homeland Security C.O.B.R.A. Team Leader (Chemical, Ordinance, Biological, Radiological, and Anti-Terrorism). This Unit, comprised of specially trained SWAT Operators, responds to mass casualty incidents, hazardous materials incidents, and acts of terrorism.

Chief Chevalier is also a third degree black belt and attained his certified instructor status in 1990.

Chief Chevalier currently serves on the following:

  • City of Atlanta Campus Safety Task Force
  • Campus Law Enforcement Crime Prevention Task Force
  • City of Atlanta Student Safety Advisory Council

Chief Chevalier formerly served:

  •  As Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Reserve, Inc.
  • On the National Law Enforcement CBRNE Advisory Council (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive)

  • Oversaw MSM Security Surveillance and worked with U.S. Secret Service for President Obama’s visit to Morehouse College (2013)
